Cashback gives you part of a qualifying purchase back after you buy. With a cashback website, you usually sign in, follow its retailer link and complete your order. The retailer must then approve the purchase before the reward can be paid.

Treat it as a possible saving on something you already need, rather than money you can rely on for your next bill. A purchase showing in your account is not the same as money available to withdraw.

What is cashback, and where does the money come from?

Retailers can pay a cashback site a commission for sending them a customer. The site shares a reward with you when the purchase meets its rules. It is a marketing arrangement, not a refund from your bank. TopCashback explains the model.

A percentage reward depends on the eligible purchase value; a fixed reward depends on completing the specified action. Neither means every item, customer or payment method qualifies.

How to use a cashback site

  1. Find the best total price first. Include delivery, fees and any discount you could use instead.
  2. Compare the eligible cashback rate. Read the retailer’s page, including new-customer rules, excluded products and voucher restrictions.
  3. Sign in and click through immediately before shopping. Complete the order in that visit. Avoid another cashback link or competing shopping extension taking over the referral.
  4. Keep the evidence. Save your order number, receipt and the offer terms you relied on. Check your account after the retailer’s stated tracking window.
  5. Wait for approval and payment. Request a withdrawal only when the provider says the balance is available.

Tracking depends on the provider’s technology and permissions. Read its cookie and tracking guidance and decide whether you are comfortable with it. You do not need to weaken your security settings across all websites. See TopCashback’s tracking checklist.

Is cashback actually the cheapest option?

Not necessarily. Compare the amount you must pay today before considering a reward that might arrive later.

Illustrative example: a £100 purchase with 5% cashback would return £5 if the whole £100 qualifies and the reward is paid. That gives a £95 eventual cost. Another retailer selling the same item for £94 without cashback is still cheaper.

Check what counts towards the calculation. VAT, delivery and other charges can be excluded, so 5% of the checkout total is not always the right calculation. The same exclusions can affect minimum-spend bonuses. Quidco lists its standard exclusions.

The useful habit is checking cashback on planned purchases, not finding reasons to spend. MoneyHelper’s cashback overview makes the same distinction.

Tracked, confirmed and available: what do they mean?

The labels differ between providers. Do not assume that “confirmed” always means you can withdraw.

Provider What to look for
TopCashback In Progress covers purchases still being processed. Available means cashback can be requested for payout.
Quidco Confirmed means the retailer has approved the purchase but Quidco is awaiting funds. Check the withdrawal balance rather than assuming approval means payment.

TopCashback’s current labels replace its older Pending/Confirmed/Payable terminology. An expected payable date is an estimate, not a payment promise. Read the TopCashback earnings guide and Quidco’s status definitions.

There is no single waiting period for every retailer. Check the estimate for your purchase and leave room for approval delays. Do not spend an expected reward before it arrives.

What if your cashback does not track?

Start with the retailer’s tracking estimate. A missing transaction and a transaction waiting for approval are different problems.

  • Check that you used the correct account and completed the order after clicking through.
  • Check the product, customer eligibility and payment method against the offer rules.
  • Look for a voucher code or another referral link that could have affected attribution.
  • Keep your receipt and submit a claim through the cashback provider, not through this website.

TopCashback says to raise a missing cashback claim if a purchase has not appeared after seven days. Follow the retailer’s particular claim rules. TopCashback missing-transaction help.

Quidco says ordinary purchases often track within 72 hours, and missing claims generally need to be raised within 45 days of purchase. Some retailers do not accept claims; Quidco Compare has separate rules. Read the retailer’s page and Quidco’s claim restrictions before waiting or submitting.

A claim is a request to investigate, not a guarantee of payment.

Can you combine cashback with a discount or referral code?

Only when the particular offer allows it. A retailer accepting a code at checkout does not prove the cashback provider will accept it too.

Quidco’s standard exclusions include codes not published on its retailer page, some gift-card payments, returns and purchases credited to another referrer. Retailer-specific terms still matter. A guaranteed checkout discount may be worth more than uncertain cashback.

For a referral bonus, check whether you need a particular invitation, an opt-in, qualifying spend or approved cashback by a deadline. Account registration alone may not qualify. Our referral guide explains the questions to ask.

Which cashback offers should you compare?

Start with the retailers you actually use and the qualification rules, rather than choosing a platform solely for its joining bonus.

  • TopCashback: read our TopCashback offer for the listed invitation and requirements.
  • Quidco: see the Quidco offer and check what counts towards its bonus.
  • Rakuten: compare the Rakuten offer and its qualifying purchase window.

Joining offers change. Individual offer pages keep the reward, conditions and check date together, so this guide does not duplicate a bonus amount that could become outdated.

Not every shopping reward is withdrawable cash. Before joining any app, check whether you receive money, vouchers, points or bill credit, and whether its payout options are useful to you.

Common questions

Can I claim the same order through two cashback sites?

Do not count on two rewards for one referral-based purchase. Another referrer receiving the commission can make a claim ineligible. Compare the offers and choose the route you want before ordering.

Will returning an order affect cashback?

It can. Cancellations, returns and amendments can invalidate cashback under the provider’s rules. Do not keep something unsuitable just to preserve a reward.

How do I withdraw cashback?

Check the provider’s available balance and payout options. Minimums, payment methods and voucher restrictions can differ. A gift-card payout is not interchangeable with cash in your bank account.

Is cashback the same as taking cash out at a till?

No. Cash withdrawn at a checkout comes from your own account. Shopping cashback is a conditional reward associated with a purchase.

Does this website guarantee a reward?

No. We explain the offer and link to the provider. The provider decides whether a purchase qualifies. Our funding explanation explains how referral links support the website.
