A gift card can make planned shopping cheaper in two different ways: you pay less than its spending value, or buy it at face value and earn a reward towards a later purchase. The distinction matters when comparing savings.
Supermarket shopping can be a useful fit if you already know where you will shop and the card covers your basket. Start small and buy only credit you expect to use soon. Neither a discount nor a referral bonus makes an unnecessary purchase worthwhile.
Discounted gift cards versus gift-card cashback
| Route | What you pay and receive | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Discounted gift card | Pay less than the available balance on the card | Actual price, remaining balance, fees, expiry and protection |
| Gift-card cashback | Usually pay for a card and receive separate cashback points or rewards | Reward type, usable value, redemption threshold and payment-method rate |
Illustrative example, not a live offer: a £50 gift card sold for £47.50 saves £2.50 immediately. A £50 card earning 5% in usable reward value also creates £2.50 of value, but you still pay £50 upfront and must redeem the reward under its rules. Do not count points you will never use as equivalent to money in your bank.

How Everup gift cards work
Everup lets you choose a retailer, buy a digital gift card and earn Cashback Points. Its help says you can open the card immediately after purchase, use the link in your email confirmation, or find it later under Gift Card Orders in your wallet. Check the retailer’s label for online, in-store or combined use.
The points rate can depend on the brand, promotion and payment method. Open Banking may give a higher rate where available. Check the rate on your own checkout rather than assuming a headline maximum applies to your supermarket.
This is not necessarily an instant discount on the amount charged. Points are a separate reward. Everup’s help describes using them towards later gift cards, with bank redemption subject to prior gift-card redemption requirements. Its help pages disagree about the minimum redemption balance, so confirm the current threshold in the app before buying.

Everup referral rewards
Our existing invitation code is RDBO311337YSIQCD. Everup’s public referral guide describes 10 million in-app coins for the invited customer after signing up with a code and redeeming at least £10 of Cashback Points towards gift cards. Spending £10 on a gift card alone is not the same qualification. Phone verification is required.
The referrer’s £5 and coin reward is separate. Coins are used in games; they are not a fixed cash payment, and winnings are not guaranteed. Check your invitation in the app before relying on a reward.

How Cards2Cash works
Cards2Cash is a marketplace for buying and selling gift cards. For a buyer, the useful comparison is the listing price against the usable card balance. Availability and discounts depend on the cards listed; do not assume a particular supermarket or rate will always be available.
Its help says purchased gift cards are delivered electronically, with the code and PIN available by email or through your profile. Check the balance promptly and read the individual card’s redemption instructions.
Cards2Cash describes limited 14-day buyer protection for an incorrect balance, a card spent before you use it, or a missing order. It excludes issues after spending the balance, allowing a card to expire, and not answering information requests within 48 hours. This is not an unlimited refund guarantee. Read Cards2Cash’s delivery and protection help.
Cards2Cash referral: buying and selling are different
The supplied referral invitation uses code CARDS2CASH-AT8PXP and shows two separate rewards:
- Buying: both people get £2 credit after the invited customer’s first purchase of at least £25.
- Selling: both people get a +1% bonus payout on the invited customer’s first sale of at least £20.
These figures come from the invitation screenshot supplied to us, reviewed on 18 October 2026. We have not independently confirmed the full referral terms, credit restrictions or payment timing publicly. Confirm them before paying; do not assume the credit is withdrawable or that both rewards can be combined.

A practical routine for grocery shopping
- Choose the supermarket first. Compare the normal grocery prices and use a retailer you already shop with.
- Check the card covers your purchase. Look for online versus in-store rules, excluded products, minimum values and expiry.
- Compare the actual saving. Check the card price, reward rate, fees and whether you can redeem any points. Do not include an uncertain referral bonus in the basic saving.
- Buy a manageable amount. For a first purchase, test a small card before committing a large grocery budget. Allow time to resolve delivery or payment problems before checkout.
- Open the email or app and redeem. Follow the retailer’s instructions. Keep the code private, retain the receipt and track any remaining balance.
You do not need games, prize draws or repeat referrals to benefit from an ordinary gift-card saving. Keep those separate from the value of your planned shop.
Checks before you commit money
- Expiry and remaining balance: a £50 card is useful only if that balance is available and you can spend it before expiry.
- Partial payments: check whether the retailer allows a gift card plus another payment method, especially online.
- Returns and cancellation: check how refunds are issued and whether the gift-card purchase itself can be cancelled. Do not assume cash refunds.
- Other promotions: loyalty offers, discount codes and click-through cashback may have gift-card exclusions. Never assume stacking is allowed.
- Retailer and platform risk: gift-card credit is less flexible than cash. Do not stockpile more than you can afford to have tied up.
- Delivery: provider help describes electronic access, but payment reviews and technical issues can still disrupt a purchase. Keep another way to pay.
Common questions
Do gift cards always save money?
No. A discount can be outweighed by higher prices at that retailer, fees, an unused balance or an expired card. Compare the same basket and only count value you can use.
Is Everup cashback the same as a cheaper gift-card price?
No. An upfront discount reduces today’s payment. Cashback Points are a separate reward with redemption rules. Compare both the amount charged and the eventual usable reward.
Does the Cards2Cash £25 minimum mean a £25 card balance?
The supplied invitation says a first purchase with a £25 minimum, but does not resolve how discounted face value, fees or multiple cards are treated. Confirm the qualifying purchase amount with Cards2Cash before buying.
Can I combine these rewards with other cashback?
Only if both providers and the retailer allow it. Gift-card purchases and payments can be excluded from other cashback schemes. Treat any extra layer as unconfirmed until you read its rules.
Should I buy more to unlock a referral bonus?
Only buy what already fits your shopping budget and needs. A small bonus does not justify tying up money in a card you may not use.
